Makeover~ in a Boutique
Dahlia, pulled along by her overflowing passion as a magical device meister, had decided to make her own company. The next day, once again, she came to the commerce guild. Because Tobias didn’t come when she was there yesterday, the re-registration for the portable stove was postponed to this day.
If he didn’t show up again, there was a possibility that the guild itself might make a move. Dahlia hastened her pace a little bit as she climbed the stairs to the second floor.
“Good morning, Miss Dahlia,” said Ivan. “Yesterday, after you left, Mr. Tobias has come to cancel the royalties agreement of the portable stove.”
Hearing the anticipated news from Ivan, Dahlia returned his greeting with a sigh of relief.
“Thank you very much, Mr. Ivan.”
“I will bring the document out now. Since Mr. Dominique will come at noon, you should be able to do the re-registration today.”
“I’ll leave it to you.”
The procedure for re-registration was easy, and the paper-work was also simple. The notary, in this case Dominique, would only need to verify Dahlia’s identity, and then issue the certificate. This time, it wasn’t needed for him to sit in on the entire process.
With this, there won’t be a record of a penalty in Tobias career as magic device meister. What kinds of rumors would be spreading through the commerce guild, however, was a different matter entirely.
While confirming her documents, about a half dozen men entered the meeting room beside the office. It was apparently a meeting for a textile-related company. And since there was someone who’s late, a chatter started to emerge.
“That reminds me, I heard some news below. They said that ‘that’ second son of Orlando started flinging with a new woman right before marriage,” said one of them.
Naturally, they didn’t think that the person in question, namely Dahlia, was able to hear them faintly from the corner of the office. Without covering her ears, or any action whatsoever, she kept flipping through the documents as if there was nothing wrong.
“Orlando’s second son… Ah, that waterproof cloth Tobias. Wait, so he hasn’t married yet?”
“His fiancee was that Carlo’s daughter, right? Tanya, was it? Well, she was his master’s daughter, so he probably couldn’t refuse at that time.”
“I heard that his new woman was a receptionist at his company. I’ve seen her before in passing, she’s a young and beautiful one.”
“I feel bad for that Tanya, being thrown away like that. If Carlo were still alive, I’m sure it wouldn’t have turned out like that.”
The rumors couldn’t be further from the truth. Tobias being the waterproof cloth maker, her name being Tanya, Dahlia inwardly retorted, trying to keep her calm. Even so, she started feeling hot under the collar. 1
“…Seems like those old sparrows are noisy today.”
A sudden slap on her shoulder made her turn. There, she found Gabriella. Today she wore a light purple dress, decorated with lace of a similar color. Her ivory hair was done in an updo, fixed by a silver clasp with a blue gem sparkling on it. An appearance that fascinated others, as always.
“If you don’t have any plans, how about keeping me company?”
“Would this not disturb your work?”
“It’s my day-off today. And since my husband is away I have some free time, so I came here.”
Dahlia thought that she was either being considerate or that she had something to talk about regarding the company, so she agreed to go with her. When they came out from the guild, a carriage already awaited them there.
“Well then, Dahlia, let’s learn how to ‘behave like a CEO’, shall we?”
“Um, even if I said I’m going to make a company, it’s still just me alone, you know?”
“Yeah, that’s why precisely. I think it’s better for you to start properly acting like one, so you won’t be underestimated.”
Like a Cheshire cat, Gabriella smiled like a cat who found her prey.

The first thing they visited was a boutique. Although it was a shop marketed towards the common people, they still deal with high quality apparels. In this world, fashion related items feels a little bit more pricey than her previous one. Dahlia unconsciously tugged Gabriella’s sleeve.
“Umm, Mrs. Gabriella, what about the budget–”
“It’s fine.” Gabriella stopped her Dahlia’s question. “If it isn’t enough, my husband’s wallet will pay for it as he is your guarantor.”
After that ambiguous answer, now matter what she asked, she only got a smile in response.
“Welcome, we have been waiting for you.”
Done with the greetings, the shop’s clerk immediately stripped Dahlia of the dark ash clothes she usually wore. The measurement was also done while she was still confused, and somehow Gabriella and the clerk started scolding her because of her completely unfitting underwear size. Her reasoning that her body didn’t change much from her academy days, so it would be fine to buy the same size, only made the scolding even fiercer.
The clerk firmly held her and measured her again, and then gave her new underwear to try. While at it, she repeated, ‘Dear customer, it’s important to put on lingerie that matches your size!’ thrice. In the end, she bought three new sets that matched her size.
After that, they put a cloth on her face to check what color that matches or not. Then they put the matching colors on paper and give it back to her. It seems like she should pick a color among them.
When Dahlia was asked what her clothing preferences are, she answered, “Easy to move in, a color that won’t make stains conspicuous, and easy to wash.” The clerk froze, and Gabriella only could put her palm to her face. 2
Afterwards, she was shoved to the changing room, and the clerk came in with a mountain of clothes in her hands.
“Please try on everything.”
Dahlia was frightened by the clerk’s scary smile, but when she went to Gabriella for help, the woman entered the changing room with nearly twice of what the clerk had.
After putting and taking off clothes repeatedly for what felt like an eternity to Dahlia, the clerk and Gabriella had screened and lined up about 10 out of 20 sets. She was told to choose at least three from them, but as she went for the cheapest first, they easily noticed.
“You see Dahlia,” Gabriella starts to explain, “This kind of clothing is like our ‘introduction letter’ when we introduce ourselves to the other party. Because you will be the head of a company, there should be a sense of trust when holding a meeting or dealing with a customer. So, to make a great first impression, good clothes are needed.”
“That’s right, clothes are important! Dear customer, you definitely should switch to something that fits you best!”
Despite being convinced for now by their explanation, Dahlia still didn’t understand what kind of clothes would build trust and make a good impression. To be honest, she had no idea what suited her, and consequently no confidence in her choices. After telling them such and asking for advice, they finally settled on 2 designs.
The first set was, a lampblack dress with a vanilla beige coat. The second one was, a clear hyacinth blue outfit and a dark blue long skirt with a little lace decoration.
“In the end, a loose clothing that didn’t fit your size would become hard to move in later. Nowadays, there are already many fabrics with good elasticity. Especially those fabric made by mixing unicorn’s hair in them, you really can relax on those. I recommend them.” the clerk threw in some of her sales pitch.
As her eyes wander to pick the third set, the words ‘Unicorn’ from the clerk have pricked her ears. After mulling over it, she chose to buy olive green pants on top of the rest. Of course, it was made of the most elastic cloth made from Unicorn hair. To go along with it, she decided on a white lily colored summer sweater with the slightest tints of white and green, as well as a white shirt. If she could trust her memory, this would be the first white clothes she had bought in her current life.
They also decided to search for shoes that will fit all the combinations. Dahlia put her foot down and decided that two pairs would be the maximum, causing Gabriella and the clerk to discuss and have her try on shoes endlessly. In the end, she chose beige colored shoes that match her skin tone and glossy black shoes. For not hindering her movement, she chose shoes with low heels.
Finally, when they have finished choosing clothes and shoes for her, Dahlia was already burnt out.
The dresses and underwears adjustment was done right at the shop. It seems they have specialist seamstresses inside. The bill was calculated while they waited, but somehow, instead of Dahlia, the clerk gave the invoice to Gabriella.
“Dahlia, could you give me 5 big silver coins?”
For Dahlia, a big silver coin is about 10,000 yen. They have bought about 7 pairs of clothes, 3 pairs of underwear, and 2 pairs of shoes. There was no way 5 big silver coins would be enough for that.
“I could pay by myself. It’s absolutely higher than that, right?”
“Then, you could use that leeway for our next stop.”
Dahlia head started to spin at the mention of that.
As a business manager I can say that they’re totally right, even though I also hate buying expensive clothes.
