The Settlement of Engagement Cancelation
It was just about 2 o’clock when Tobias entered the meeting room. In the room Dahlia, guild witnesses, and a notary were already there.
They sat across a big table, Tobias and Dahlia facing each other, with one witness sitting next to them. The notary emptied one seat and sat down.
“Now, we will proceed with the annulment of the contract and the clearing of the joint account based on the proof of engagement’s form. From the guild, there will be two witnesses, Gabriela Jedda, the deputy guild chief, and I, Ivano Badoel, in charge of contract management.”
Ivano, who introduced himself, gave a slight bow together with Gabriela. Gabriela sat next to Dahlia and Ivano sat next to Tobias.
“The notary is me, Dominic Kempfell.”
The white-haired old man also gave a slight bow. The notary who had been in this commercial guild the longest, and had handled the largest number of requests. The notary both Dahlia’s father and Tobias’s father were most indebted to.
“In order to annul the contract, first we will close and clear the joint account of the two from the commercial guild’s order system. The 40 pieces of gold which have been deposited under the joint name of Mr. Tobias Orlando and Ms. Dahlia Rosetti will be divided into two halves and each person will get 20 pieces of gold, is that clear?”
With Dahlia and Tobias’s assent, Ivano unfolded the package next to the account entry. One each of blue cloth was placed in front of the two and twenty gold coins were stacked there.
These 20 pieces of gold would be about 2 million yen or so. These were the profits from the original magic devices that had been registered to the commercial guild, and the sale of made to order items.
Normally, this might be quite a large sum of money, however since magical tool production required fee for materials and research, one would need extra savings no matter what. Also, since there was no insurance in this world, this was also an emergency fund for when one got sick or injured.
“Then next, are the contents of the cancelation of engagement written in the proof of engagement. It is written here that ‘The person responsible for the cancelation of the engagement will be liable to pay 12 coins as consolation to the other concerned party.’. Which one of you would this be?”
“It would be me.”
Tobias said, changing the usual “Ore” to “Watashi”. Then, Dahlia slightly muttered “Twelve gold coins huh,” could be heard. Dahlia didn’t know whether she thought this consolation money was cheap or expensive.
“Then, it will be 12 pieces for Ms. Dahlia. Mr. Tobias, are you sure you want to transfer it from the returned money?”
“Yes”
Twelve of Tobias’s twenty gold coins were moved towards Dahlia.1
“This is the contract for the newly built house during the engagement period. The price of the house is 100 gold coins, 50 pieces from Tobias, 50 pieces from Dahlia. Currently, it is under the joint name. The options here are dividing the profits after reselling the house, or having the owner of the house return the other party’s investments at the time of purchase. Which would it be?
“I would like to own it.”
Dahlia listened silently to Tobias who said it as if it was obvious.
“Understood. Then please pay 50 coins to Ms. Dahlia.”
Following Ivano’s words, Tobias arranged 20 gold coins from the bag that he had brought, next to 8 gold coins in front of him. And he pushed out the blue clothes to Dahlia.
“Dahlia, wait a little bit for the rest. I don’t have the money for the house right now. I will return it soon after I move in.”
“What?”2
It was not Dahlia, but Ivano, who sat next to Tobias, who let out the silly voice.
Gabriela continued the statement to make up for it.
“You can not change the ownership until your payment is completed, understood?”
“Yes, I will return the insufficient amount directly to Dahlia. If I have Dahlia’s consent, I can change the name at the government office, right?”
“………”
Dahlia was speechless.
Where in the world would there be a man who’d borrow money from the woman he broke his engagement with to live in a house with the girl he cheated on his fiance with? Moreover, rather than asking for it behind one’s back, was there a fool who would say so like it was natural for one to lend money at a place where witnesses and a notary were present in the commercial guild? Unfortunately, such a man was right in front of her.
When thinking the Tobias that she knew until now and the man in front of her didn’t resemble each other, Dominique, who still present in the room, coughed loudly, twice at that.
“Changing the name without payment is very likely to be problematic, so I do not recommend it……. How would you like it?”
“Please change the name after the payment.”
Dahlia strongly refused, of course.
“That will be a problem for me! I promised Emilia we’ll live there right away!”
There was silence.
Tobias who had said that without thinking, was flustered and couldn’t continue his words. Ivano had a question mark saying ‘what did you say’ clearly on his face. Gabriella had a beautiful smile, but her eyes were not smiling at all. Dominique held the document until his finger turned white without changing his expression at all.
Dahlia, while watching the scene unfold before her, took every memory during her engagement which wasn’t particularly bad and, using every ounce of her mental strength, shredded them to pieces.
“We trust Mr. Orlando, so the Commerce Guild can lend it to you.”
It was Gabriela who first broke the silence. Her scarlet lips alone smiled bewitchingly toward Tobias who was still upset. She purposely called him with the Orlando surname, not his given name, Tobias.
“There will be work in the future, so let’s split the payments on a monthly basis. Since you’ll be living with a new woman, you ought to ‘settle’ things clearly, or you’ll be disliked.”
“… I’m sorry, I’m in your debt…”
The buzzing sound of a mosquito could be heard.
・・・・・・・
After writing out the documents related to the cancelation of engagement and debt, Tobias left the room as though trying to escape. The reception counter next to the meeting room was a place where one could hear a lot of voices. The incident with Tobias earlier would become someone’s drunk chatter tonight…
Dahlia finally stood up, suppressing the long-lasting headache. And she thanked the three people who remained there and tried to leave the room.
“Ah, Ms. Dahlia. It might be rude to ask such things but…”
A mustard-color haired man with a bunch of papers asked in a low voice.
“No, Mr. Ivano, please do not hesitate…”
“About Mr. Tobias, has he always been such an idi-, no, such a person?
Dahlia was able to understand with a tacit understanding that he had a nearly irresistible desire to say ‘such an idiot’. Dahlia was looking off into the distance.
“I too found out about it for the first time today …”
“Well, Ms. Dahlia, are you all right?”
“If I say there’s no problem, it would be a lie… but there’s no helping it, and I wonder if I’m done with it. When I think about how I can freely make magical devices from now on, I feel that I can get over this”
Dahlia said so as she thought, but those were her true feelings.
“Ms. Dahlia, thanks for your hard work”
It was Dominique who spoke next.
“No, thank you very much. Mr. Dominique”
“I was very indebted to your father. Even though I was planning to pass away first, he overtook me and I have not yet been able to return my debt. Please consult with me if you have a problem, even if it is not a request for a notary. “
“Yes, thank you”
Dominique’s low voice reminded Dahlia of her father. She really appreciated his care now.
“Now that the formalities are over, what will Ms. Dahlia do from now on?”
“I will go to the new house and have the furniture sent back home. I moved out this morning itself and am just going right back, so it will be over easily.”
Lightly nodding to Dahlia’s words, Gabriella grandly opened the door wide with both hands. It was funny to see the staff who looked this way turned their eyes off at once.
Gabriela looked back slowly and smiled gracefully towards Dahlia.
“Oh, let me just say one thing. Congratulations on the annulment of your engagement.”3

Thanks for the new chapter!
Haha… this was a fun chapter. Thank you for the new release and good save there by the Guild member who loaned the money to Tobias so he could pay Dahlia. This kind of clean cut is much appreciated – he has no reason to go back to her or make excuses and Dahlia gets to move on. I have seen a few novels where things like this are left unsorted and the guy comes back to cause more chaos later on. Hopefully, that won’t be the case.
Thanks once again and looking forward to more. On a yet another note, awesome inn picture btw!! 🙂
Thanks for the chapter! That definitely deserves a congrats, the ex was an absolute fool, & a petty, insecure, manipulator. He saved her from a lifetime of misery by falling in the hands of a bigger manipulator.
My guess is Tobias company relied on the MC in order to survive and he will soon be bankrupt and that new secretary/gold digger of his will start cheating on him. Also I can’t wait for the MC to meet the ML it seems like those two nerds have perfect chemistry also it would be nice if we got two updates a week.
Why do I have the strange feeling that Tobias won’t be able to repay the Guild’s loan? Oh well, that’d be the Commerce Guild’s problem not Dahlia’s.
Dang, I’m not even going to try to not call this idiot an idiot. Like, what the freakin’ heck man? Is the concept of basic human decency *that* absent from your brain?
…I just hope this *IDIOT* gets what’s coming. I swear, if I don’t see this man suffer later I am going to lose it.
On another note, yeah Dahlia! You go show that loser what he missed!
Thanks for the chapter.
