Ever since I returned from the Baptism Ceremony, I stayed in my room the entire time. I think it’s the backlash of thinking it almost natural that I would receive the job of Mage like my brother and sister.
I was betrayed by that hopeful expectation and was extremely sad.
However, on the morning of the second day of confining myself, my stomach growled (as one would expect), and I secretly left my room.
When I went to the living room, I found my mother drinking tea at the terrace table. The maid Ellie was also staying by Mother’s side.
“Oh my, Daisy! You finally showed your face!”
“Oh my, you must be famished. Of course, you must be. Ellie, some porridge or soup, even risotto would be good. Could you make something easy on the stomach?”
When mother gave her instructions, Ellie said, “I have already prepared by boiling the oats so that the Miss can eat whenever she comes out,” as she smiled and bowed, then disappeared to the kitchen.
I waited just for a tiny bit at the dining table. Ellie came, bringing a warm, freshly-made soup and porridge with a somewhat larger portion of oats.
I scooped with my spoon and ate. The porridge was filled with a gentle flavor – the vegetables and meats were all finely minced into small pieces and the oats were boiled until tender. My stomach and mind gradually became warm.
When I finished my meal at the dining table, my father came to me. “Daisy! You finally came out, haven’t you? Father is glad!” he said as he hugged me.
“Daisy, Father has a present for you!” Father cracked a smile and took my hand and led me to his office.
◆
Besides Father’s work desk, there were a few sparkling, transparent glass tools and three somewhat splendid-looking books.
“This a present for Daisy, who’ll become an Alchemist!”
Unsteadily, I approached the desk, curious about those mysterious tools and interested in those books. When I flipped through the book on the top of the stack, the recipes of various things were written down.
“Filtration, distillation, potion?” The book was packed with tons of knowledge that I never knew up until now. I felt a desire to read more of this book.
“This is all for me?” When I turned around, my father, who was watching over me from behind, nodded.
“But aren’t Father and Mother disappointed that I did not become a Mage like my older brother and sister?” Having said that myself, I recalled it once again and felt the sadness creep up, as my vision grew blurry.
“Daisy, “Alchemist” is the job that God gave to you because they thought it fit you perfectly. As long as Daisy gives it her best, Father, Mother, and everyone else will support you.”
Father took out a handkerchief from his chest pocket and gently wiped my wet eyes.
“Father, I’ll do my best! I’ll become a splendid Alchemist!”
I felt relieved and hugged Father tightly. I’d been terrified of being told that I was a useless child. Despite my crying, Father still hugged me.
◆
Alchemy can involve using fire, so a cabin detached from the rest of the mansion was built and given to me as my private laboratory. Tools for experimenting made of beautiful glass and ceramic were brought there with the servants’ help.
To start out, I wanted to read the books in my room, so the three volumes of books—“Introduction to Alchemy”—were left in my room.

Thanks for the new chapter!
Thanks for the chapter!
Kind of nice to see normal, loving & supportive parents in a fantasy story like this.
Thanks for the chapters.
Definitely curious how things will develop from here.
The writing is moving at quite a brisk pace. Wonder if it’s just to get past the exposition and into the alchemy, or something else.
I mean let’s be real. We signed up for the slice of life alchemy, not to watch someone get sad about not getting their dream job.
Mhmm.
Agree. That why if other dont like, please read other novel.
Finally a novel where the parents support their children!!
Besides, alchemy as a fantasy job has a plethora of uses, like medicine, cosmetics, poisons, weapons, traps, even food processing and preservation and drinks creation… Basically, your imagination is the limit.
I still wonder why writers still think that alchemy is a losing job, when real deal alchemists in fiction are loaded
I kind of explained it in my NU review, but alchemist job itself isn’t that bad. In later chapters, this topic is slowly touched in various ways (that I won’t spoil).
It’s probably because they never played the Mana Khemia or Atelier Series games. If they did, they’d know that Alchemist are near or beyond God Tier.
This! This is how parents SHOULD react when their child has a “disappointing” job, not like in “Two in One Princesses” where the guy not only chained her down to a stone bed since infancy, among other horrors, but sold her to sex-slavery to die a horrible death AT AGE 10, and her story only gets worse from there…
Okay, if maid was the best job for her the first time, why isn’t she once again a maid?
If alchemist is the best job for her this time, why wasn’t she an alchemist last time?
