The Poisoned Prince

The royal castle was in an uproar from the morning.

“Somebody! Call the court physician! Investigate the cause as soon as possible!”

That morning, the first prince William, the only son of the current king, had collapsed.

His Majesty the King and the Queen, his birth mother, rushed to the prince’s room.
The prince was lying on the bed in his room, his complexion purplish, and occasionally he would hold his abdomen and curled up in pain.
Seeing this, the queen shed tears and took the prince’s small hand and snuggled up to it.

“How’s his condition?” the King lost his patience and asked the doctor.

“Sir, he is suffering from some kind of poisoning. Give me a detoxification potion.”

The court physician had his assistant look for the antidote among the medicines he had on hand and received it.

“Not again…” the king muttered with a bitter look on his face. Although they were vigilant, this was not the first time.

The young king had married only the Queen. The nobles advising the king to take a second wife were persistent even though the king did not want to, and there were also the Grand Princes, the previous king’s sons.

The first prince, who was still young, was a hindrance to those who wanted to inherit the next throne and to the nobles who planned to make their daughters the birth mother of the future king.

The queen broke down and wept.

It was fine for her to be targeted. However, she couldn’t bear the thought of her young child being tormented so often, thus she grieved. If the young prince at least had a younger brother, the ambitions of those who wanted to usurp the throne would be disheartened. She hoped that she would be able to give birth to another prince, but she was unable to do so. The queen lamented over her incompetence as a mother. ¹

“I shall let the prince drink the detoxification potion.”

After bowing to the king, the court physician went to the prince’s side and put the opening of the potion vial with the lid open to his mouth. This was the usual article that was used when the prince was poisoned. The detoxification potion was made in a proper place and was of quality befitting royal use.

…The prince was supposed to recover to his usual state.

1. Flowingcloud: Honestly, just wanted to point out this is quite a disturbing statement from the author. Sexism is ingrained in Japanese culture especially and the last line about her childbearing abilities is not a good influence on readers and keeps them in this mindset.
   Arocks141: Tbf, sexism is ingrained in all cultures at some level or the other. It probably has to do with several thousands of years of patriarchal supremacy.
