Abandoned Dragon Chapter 5

“Evil Dragon, taste the wrath of this Holy Sword!”

Shouting a cheesy line like from a play, holding a holy sword (a rolled-up job listing magazine from a convenience store), my idiot friend pretended to do battle with Gonsuke.

Gonsuke looked at my friend Masa with a confused expression.

“Geez, you’re no good at this, Gonsuke.”

“I’ve never played a game like this.”

“Seriously. What kind of games did you even play?”

“I played with cats like Pon.”

“But…Dragon?”

“I thought it was a lizard.”

“Even if you thought it was a lizard, you could have come up with some sort of game to play.”

We were standing in the parking lot of a convenience store.

When he met me at the crossroads, Masa was on his way to the convenience store to buy juice, snacks, and rice.

Gonsuke was intrigued seeing a bike for the first time and wanted to ride on it. 1

Certainly, there are dogs that do that kind of trick in the circus.

Masa was interested in the idea, so he allowed it, but when I put Gonsuke on the bike it immediately fell over, and they cried out for me.

Despite that experience, Gonsuke was still interested in bikes, and tried to chase after Masa as he headed towards the convenience store.

It would have been a waste of time to pull on the leash to try and stop Gonsuke, so it turned into a long walk. 2

When Masa noticed we were following, he got off his bike and walked towards the store with the two of us.

The convenience store had a number of people in it, since we were out in the country without many stores it was always busy.

With the exception of service dogs, pets weren’t allowed inside the store.

Because of that, I asked Masa to get me some juice when he went in and bring it out.

I waited outside, and since a dragon was a rare sight, I got a lot of attention from the other customers.

A little kid, maybe an elementary schooler, came up with their parents and hugged Gonsuke while squealing in delight.

That kid was pretty amazing.

A woman, presumably the kid’s mother, was scolding her.

Just like that, I waited for Masa to come out.

While I was waiting, I came up with an idea and asked the bulletin board for help on how to keep a dragon.

While I was playing around on my phone, Masa came out of the store.

I received the juice, but when I tried to drink it I felt the intense gaze of Gonsuke upon me.

Gonsuke’s tail, which had grown immensely, was slapping against the pavement.

I drank it, a certain famous brand of black carbonated drinks.

I let out a contented belch.

“Ah~ tasty.”

So I said.

Dandandan!!

Dadan!!

Daan!!

Daaaan!!

The sound of Gonsuke’s tail, insistently slapping the concrete, became fierce.

“You can’t drink this!”

“I want it.”

“No! No way!”

Dandandandan!!
Dadan! Dadan!

“Garururu!”

“Even if you growl, you can’t have it, it’s bad for you!”

While Gonsuke and I faced off against one another, a sales clerk came out of the convenience store and called out anxiously.

“Dear customer, I’m sorry, but the parking lot will be damaged and it will bother the other customers if this goes on, so could you please stop your pet from slamming its tail.”

“Ah, so, sorry!”

I grabbed Gonsuke’s head and made him lower it along with my own.

The clerk smiled and went back inside after seeing Gonsuke put into such a pose.

Gonsuke shook off my hand, looking displeased.

“You’re bad. Bad dragon!” 3

I looked around, and I suddenly realized that we had attracted quite a crowd. People who were shopping or simply taking a break in their cars were gawking at us. Some of them had their phones out to take pictures or videos of the scene.

“Ack, so embarrassing!”

“For now, should I apologize to the store and buy a snack for Gonsuke? I think there were cans of cat food here.”

So Masa suggested.

“I only had enough for the juice.”

I took out my wallet, checked the contents, and replied.

“Oh, it’s just a carton of vegetable juice. Let me take a video of it drinking, and I’ll buy it.”

“Vegetable juice, right.”

To begin with, it’s probably not a good idea to give animals processed food meant for people.

“Gonsuke-kun is sulking. You should humor her, right?”

Seeing my reluctance, Masa pointed to Gonsuke, who was curled up on the ground, pouting.

Her body was curled up, but she was moving suspiciously.

I noticed it.

The plastic bottle I had in my hand was gone.

“Gonsuke!!”

At the very moment I shouted, Gonsuke got a direct hit from the carbonated drink.

  1. Salkryn: Hold up, wasn’t MC riding his bike two chapters ago? Or does he mean a bike with a trailer?
  2. Salkryn: dammit, author, can you maintain consistency for five minutes? In chapter 3, MC was explicitly riding a bike to the convenience store with Gonsuke, now Gonsuke has never seen a bike and the convenience store is a detour?

Arocks141: Thou shalt not doubt thy author’s consistency, for there exists none.

  3. Salkryn: I will not apologize for art.
