Abandoned Dragon Chapter 6
“I told you so.”
After getting a face full of carbonated liquid, Gonsuke was curled up on the ground. She was still slapping her tail on the ground, but with noticeably less energy than before.
“I’m gonna buy some water, please look after her while I do.”
“You could just use magic for that.”
Masa appeared exasperated.
“Hey, I can’t use magic.”
“Oh, is that right?”
“Yeah. I have zero magical power.”
“Well, I don’t know your status, after all.”
“Ah, I see.”
“Well, if it’s water you need, I can create some with magic, so get her to face me. For now, it’d be best to rinse her eyes lightly.”
I took Masa up on his offer. Water appeared from the air, and I used it to rinse Gonsuke’s eyes. It must have been a bit unpleasant, but Gonsuke endured it patiently.
“Okay, is that good?”
As Masa spoke, Gonsuke lightly shook her head to get rid of the water and blinked several times.
“Kyurururu”
She let out an adorable voice and looked at us with adoring eyes. It seemed like she had recovered from the shock of getting sprayed in the eyes admirably.
“Hey, where’s the thanks for Masa?”
Upon hearing my words, Gonsuke looked at Masa while blushing slightly, and…
“Koruru~~”
She once again called out, then bowed towards Masa.
“Oh, cool. Who taught her to do that?”
“One should bow their head when apologizing to or thanking someone. She apparently picked it up after watching us when we get souvenirs from our relatives, or after my parents’ quarrel.”
“You taught her how to do that?!”
Masa smiled incredulously and patted Gonsuke’s head.
My parents were very close, but because of that they also quarreled a lot. It wasn’t unusual for them to argue while Gonsuke was around.
“She remembered it without needing to be taught.”
“Hah, the dragon is really smart.”
Masa withdrew the hand he was stroking Gonsuke with. Gonsuke turned her head to face me.
“Kururu~u”
“First of all, don’t ever do that again.”
Gonsuke hung her head in shame.
“By the way, do dragons have special dietary needs, or do they eat the mana in the air like a hermit living on a mountain top? Or maybe like an erotic demon (succubus) that sucks away men’s life force.”
“Gonsuke eats normal cat food and vegetables from my grandparents’ field.”
“No, I heard it somewhere. Yeah, they eat magic. Dragons love pure magical power.”
“Really, what does ‘pure magical power’ even mean?”
“I think it’s also called ‘kamiki’. 1It seems like there are different kinds of magical power, but you can gather that type when you visit a sacred place. If you compare it to beef, it’s something like the A5 Wagyu of magical power, a rare delicacy that’s hard to find among any race. Apparently dragons love the stuff.”
“How rare is for someone to have that kind of power?”
“For a human like you, 1 in 6 billion. For other races, it’s a little higher, maybe one in ten million?”
“So it’s rarer than winning the lottery.”
Masa nodded in reply.
“Ah, ‘winning the lottery’ sure sounds nice.”
“What should I do if I do win the lottery?”
“Well, it’s not like I’m trying to win it.”
“Huh, what’s that?”
“If I won the grand prize, we could do all sorts of things. We’d go traveling around to live and play. I wouldn’t need to get a job.”
“Oh, I see.”
“Isn’t it a genius idea?”
“Sure, if you actually manage to win the lottery, you wouldn’t have to apply for a scholarship. Going to university or a trade school costs a lot of money.”
“Yeah, yeah, scholarships are nice, but debt’s the real problem.”
“If you don’t want to borrow money, you can always go directly into the workforce.”
I sighed, and looked at Gonsuke. Gonsuke was listening to our conversation.
“…Gonsuke is a rare breed, isn’t she?”
Masa sensed the direction of my thoughts, and grabbed me by the shoulder.
“Stop it, Tetsu, don’t follow that line of thought any further.”
“Hm? What?”
“Look me in the eyes, I’m not joking around here.”
“I’m not thinking of selling her at an online auction or anything.”2
“…………”3
“I just posted a video of her doing some tricks, and I was wondering if I could make money from the number of views.” 4
“Stop it right there, that’s advertising revenue. No matter how hard you try, you don’t have the time or the talent to earn a living streaming videos on the internet.” 5
“Yeah, you’re right.”

- Salkryn: ‘kami’ as in god/spirit and ‘ki’ as in spiritual power, or that’s my best guess.
- Salkryn: A suspiciously specific denial if I ever heard one.
- Arocks141: Looks like his friend agrees.
- Salkryn: Yeah, that’s right, make your dragon turn tricks on video and sell it for profit.
Arocks141: …
Salkryn: Wait, don’t tell me that’s not what the phrase ‘turn tricks’ means?
- Salkryn: words to live by, ladies and gentlemen.
Arocks141: Unless you’re pewdiepie. Or a famous League of legends player. Or a certain famous no-hit run player. Or, well, just about any popular streamer on twitch.
Salkryn: Sadly, I am not one of those people. If you are reading this, it’s highly likely that you are not any of those people, either.
