Lunch On The River Beach

Dahlia went towards the carriage and prepared water and purple grapes for the Sleipnir.

Sleipnir ate both vegetables and meat. Dahlia was told it could do with just water during the day, but if she gave it a snack, the Sleipnir would work better. When she asked what was fine to give, she was told ‘This one particularly likes purple grapes.’ So Dahlia bought many purple grapes at a shop. As soon as the Sleipnir saw the grapes, its black eyes opened wide, and it was really cute how its eyes followed the grapes.

Today, in addition to escorting her, the Sleipnir saved a life in the end, so Dahlia decided to give it all of the grapes here. When she arranged the water and the grapes in front of its eyes, the Sleipnir neighed as it felt very happy.

After Dahlia brought her luggage from the carriage, she made a bonfire at the river. The firewood was already in the cart and she had brought a magic device for ignition, so it didn’t take a lot of time. She confirmed the direction of the wind, and next to the bonfire, she made the places where she and Wolf would sit opposite to each other. On the other side, slightly apart from the bonfire, She put two wooden sticks into the ground and stretched the rope across them. It was a simple clothesline for hanging Wolf’s clothes.

Dahlia began to make lunch, listening to the sounds of the river and the birds chirping. She cut the hard round bread she brought, put goat milk cheese and put it on the side of the fire. Sausages, which could be eaten as they were, was stabbed into a twig and kept them close to the bonfire. There were no extra dishes, so Dahlia searched the surroundings for large leaves, and arranged the dried fruits and nuts she had in her leather bag on top of it.

Fortunately, she had plenty of food and wine, so she could afford it. It appeared like she served a large portion to herself too, but she made Wolf’s portion as large as possible. Even in the spring, one would expect bathing outside was cold. Thinking like that, Dahlia put some honey in red wine and warmed it in a small pot.

Wolf was coming up from the river just as the wine was simmered. Dahlia confirmed it just by sound and said without looking back.

“Dry your clothes on the branches there. And then take the coat there until they dry. It may be a little small because it is my father’s.”

After there was a sign of rummaging sound behind her, Wolf who was wearing a coat sat next to the bonfire. He was tall and so the hem length wasn’t enough, but she hoped he would pardon it because it was an emergency.

“I’m really sorry for the inconvenience.”

“It’s not a big deal.”

The red wine was poured into a cup and the bread and sausages were arranged and offered to him.

“I only have these, please have some if you like “

“Thank you. I’ll take on your offer”

If she didn’t get her hands on the food first, this nobleman would probably decline the offer. As she thought that, Dahlia started eating without looking at Wolf intentionally.

When she bit the rye bread, the cheese on top had melted, and it matched well with the hot wine. The cheese was a bit crunchy, but it went well with rye bread. Without removing the sausage from the twig, and just bit it as it was. The combination of crisp texture, plenty of meat juice coming out, and spices that changed the taste every bite was delicious. The taste made her want to drink some ale.1

When Dahlia turned her eyes to Wolf, there was a very good smile and silently eating. Luckily, it seemed the taste suited his palate. The food was gone in a blink of an eye, but the way he ate was nice.

“I think it’s been a long time since I thought that the food was so delicious…”

After eating everything and taking a breath, Wolf muttered. As it was the first meal in two days, it wasn’t unreasonable. While listening to the sound of the wind and bonfire, Dahlia held out a second cup of red wine to Wolf. The young man thanked her and received it, but he blinked frequently while drinking.

“How are your eyes?”

“The pain is gone. But both eyes feel like they have blurred vision.”

“You should go back to the castle and see a doctor.”

“Yes, I will.”

As the direction of the smoke was changed by the wind, Dahlia turned her view to the simple clothesline. Fortunately, the smoke didn’t reach it. Dark gray clothes were slightly swaying in the wind. It would be quick to dry if one used wind magic, but unfortunately, Dahlia had no wind attribute. She tried to turn her eyes back and noticed the tattered armor on the ground. The shoulder was already gone, but the breastplate looked deep red. It seemed like it was not stained with blood.

“… Mr. Wolf, is that,’Scarlet Armor’?”2

“Yes”

He nodded easily. Dahlia had heard that the ones who wore a “scarlet armor” in the monster subjugation unit were the people who had the role of attacking the monster first. The scarlet armor was the most stand out, so it was easy to be targeted by the monster and often considered to be a lure. Even when retreating when failing to subjugate all enemies, they were the first to be targeted. That was why, even among the dangerous monster-killing units, it was the “deadliest occupation”.

“I’m not that strong, but my speed is the one thing I’m good at. So, I am good at diverting monsters’ eyes.”

“That’s……”

There was no pathetic feeling when he smiled quietly. Still, Dahlia got stuck in the words. Suddenly, she remembered the day when her father died.

Last year, it was a little more radiant green season than now. Father who went alone to the commercial guild after having lunch together. When she was told that her father had collapsed and headed there in haste, and he was already a silent dead body. He was talking well until noon, and it was a totally unexpected farewell. Why did she remember such things here and now? Dahlia looked down at her bitter memories and stared at the red wine cup.

“… I remembered last spring’s fad with this black coat”

“…… fad?”

Wolf murmured, so she brought the wine to her lips while replying to it mechanically.

“Yes. If I forgot this and took off clothes in front of a woman in the city, I wonder if I would be known as a ‘pervert’ knight.”

“Bhu!”

Dahlia blew out the wine she was drinking.

“What are you doing when people are drinking ……!”

A loud voice came out unintentionally.

“I’m sorry. I just remembered, so…”

The young man in front of Dahlia laughed with a voice that was too cheerful. The image of Wolf, who had been a knight and noble before, made a cracking sound and collapsed completely.

“I’m thankful that you are worried about the Scarlet Armor, but it’s not as dangerous as the rumors say. You looked so sad and I don’t know what to say… I’m sorry, I said something stupid”

“I’m sorry too…”

“This is how I normally talk, is that alright with you?  I’ll be happy if Mr. Dahl talks to me casually too”

“……Okay”

Dahlia deliberately said that bluntly. It seemed the bad joke was because he cared for her feelings.

  1. RantingOtome: I’m glad I ate before translating.

Arocks141: You learnt from past experiences, huh? (refer chapter 2)

  2. Arocks141: At this point in time, this is starting to seem a bit too much like Little Red Riding Hood… Is the ‘big, bad wolf’ gonna ‘eat’ her too?
