“Do you plan on making Rose Island the alumni house for Grand Chefs participants? There are Anderson and you, and now you plan on getting me in there? And there isn’t even space. Demi-Chef positions are all full.”

“That’s true. But chef Rachel really wants you to come. She even said she will make some room for you. Although I don’t know how serious she is.”

“Hey.”

Kaya raised one side of her lips while raising her finger.

“Let’s make this clear. Although I like you and we live together, I won’t make everything about you. And you should be the same. I will choose where I work. And I will work there because I deem that place has a good system or conditions in place. I won’t make this about you. Don’t treat me like a kid who can’t decide things on her own.”

“Who is treating you like a kid?”

“That’s not what a mature person would do. And we aren’t even married, we are just dating. And if we share the same workplace for that reason… We need to differentiate between public life and private life.”

“Yeah. I have nothing to say to that. I agree.”

He didn’t have a case to make anymore. Seeing Jo Minjoon reply in a defeated voice, Kaya pinched his thigh with her foot. Jo Minjoon frowned.

“What are you doing?”

“What? If you don’t like it, you should just make that expression. Don’t try to hide it.”

“Are you saying that I am upset?”

“You were upset because you couldn’t work with me. Am I right?”

“I am a man. I won’t get easily upset over things like this.”

Kaya laughed at Jo Minjoon’s reply.

“Bullshit.”

******************
Jefferson visited the next day. When Jo Minjoon was about to forget all about Joe Reggiano, Jefferson brought a sample with him and presented it to Jo Minjoon.

“How is it, Minjoon?”

“This won’t do.”

“…is that so.”

His disappointments were as big as his expectation. The depressed look on Jefferson’s face was cute considering his age. Jo Minjoon said in an apologetic voice.

“But it has improved. You seemed to have calculated the portions correctly.”

“I can’t fool around with a tongue like yours.”

“No matter how well you try to preserve it, the biggest problem here is that the air and foam will break down. You should consider…”

Jo Minjoon paused and looked at Jefferson. Although Jefferson was very cooperative, he didn’t want to say the next phrase. But he finished it anyway.

“It might be more complicated, but how about changing the method.”

“Change the process?”

“Since we can’t sell the siphon gun with every product, we should put in the ingredients that people could use to foam by themselves. While everything else could be a completed product.”

It was just like how the ramen noodles were already fried, but you still need to cook it with water, soup and the flakes to bring out the best taste. It was still a difficult proposal since Jefferson had to change some of the key processes that were in place.

Jefferson’s expression froze. But Jo Minjoon didn’t rush Jefferson. He knew what he said was a pretty heavy decision. Jefferson said things that were out of Jo Minjoon’s expectation.

“Then will it taste better?”

“… Are you actually going to put it into practice?”

“You recommended it. So, I will do it. Since I know that it will be the right decision.”

“Wait… shouldn’t you have a meeting or something before you make such a decision? Since there will be accounting problems and such …”

“I would rather take this risk and spend more money upfront than see it flop.”

Jo Minjoon smiled at Jefferson’s response. Although he was not very experienced in business, he still liked Jefferson’s attitude. He calmly replied.

“You must be different than most businessmen.”

“Me?”

“Yes. Most businessmen would just roll out a product and refine it along the way. Is there a different reason? Is it for business? Or do you just want to spread delicious dishes far and wide?”

“Well. You can’t pick and choose what the world likes. Don’t even get started with what people like. Also, I am not a simple man. I want to succeed in business. I also want to let other people enjoy great food. But my greatest dream is… to not have regrets when I look back. I don’t want to say things like ‘I should have done this back then.’”

“I am sure someone like you can do it. You are a good person. Although I haven’t known you for a long time, I can still tell.”

Jo Minjoon replied with a smile. Jefferson smiled and shrugged his shoulder.

“If a woman said something like that, I would have hired her. But it is a shame.”

“Let’s stop joking around now. How long will it take for you to change the process.”

“If I rush things, it would take a month. Although I am passionate about it, I cannot rush things too much. Anyway, how is the restaurant? I heard about the fire.”

“Well, I can’t say that it’s fine. But it is not the worst-case scenario. Restaurant is run by the people. And if the people are fine, things will go back to normal.”

“Trouble always seems to find you.”

He said it both jokingly and admiringly. So, Jo Minjoon just shrugged his shoulder. It was truly a tiresome year. Grand Chef. Hunger Trip. Rose Island. Etc…

*************

“I don’t see Minjoon.”

Javier spoke as he looked around. Janet quickly responded.

“He is at the factory. Checking on the Joe Reggiano.”

“Is that so… I wish I could go to a factory for those reasons. When will I be famous?”

“If you wanted to be famous, you should have started at Grand Chef not at a restaurant. Then you could be like him.”

Janet pointed at Anderson who was sitting at a bench. Anderson frowned as he looked at Janet.

“If you want to piss me off, drop it. I am not in the mood for it.”

“How am I pissing you off. Is there something else that is pissing you off?”

“No. just shut up and don’t bother me.”

“It looks like he woke up on the wrong side of the bed. He always looks depressed whenever someone brings up Minjoon. But when Minjoon gets back he always pretends nothing is going on. That’s really unsightly.”

Janet glared at Anderson with her arms crossed. Anderson angrily glared back at Janet. Javier left the premise with a nervous smile. The atmosphere between the two was serious. At apoint in time, Javier had tried to mediate, but now he realized that it was no use.

When Javier left, Anderson spoke in an angry tone as if he was growling.

“What do you mean by that?”

“What do you think that means?”

“Do you think I am jealous of Minjoon?”

“Were you going to say no?”

Janet fired back angrily. Anderson got up from his seat and approached Janet. He spoke angrily glaring at Janet.

“Minjoon is my friend.”

“That is not a reason to be jealous. It will only make things worse.”

“… that’s it. Let’s stop it here. I can’t even talk to you.”

“I am also jealous.”

Janet replied when Anderson was about to leave. Anderson stopped and pivoted his foot. Janet looked at his foot and spoke in a trembling tone.

“I am jealous as well. Of Jo Minjoon. He is so successful as if he is cheating. I really want to be like him, but I can never get the result that he is getting. Who wouldn’t be jealous?

“So, what are you saying?”

“Just be jealous. If you are having trouble, talk about it. With Minjoon. Don’t try to be a hero and stuff it all down. You are going to look stupid.”

Rather than angry, Anderson looked calmer. He laughed as he fully turned around.

“Are you trying to comfort me?”

“No. I am cursing at you to stop being a fake.”

“Then I won’t have to say thanks.”

“Yeah. You don’t have to.”

Janet coldly replied before sitting back down. As Anderson was about to say something, loud horns started to sound as large trucks approached. It wasn’t a normal truck; it was a food truck. The driver from the lead vehicle got off. It was Raphael.

“It seems like everyone is here. But why is the atmosphere like this?”

“…sous-chef. What is all this?”

“What do you think? It’s for transportation.”

“It’s certainly not an airplane… But it does not look like a normal truck. It looks like a food truck.”

“Shouldn’t cooks always be ready to cook anywhere?”

Raphael replied in an energetic voice. Anderson and Janet sighed at the same time. Although many cooks fantasize about food trucks, in reality operating the food truck was difficult to no end. And Anderson experienced that difficulty firsthand when he was a participant of Grand Chef.

“… So, what is the plan?”

“It is simple.”

It was Rachel who replied as she got off the passenger side of the truck.

“We will be visiting Rose Island all over the country starting with the ones closest to LA. At the same time, we will be cooking from the food truck.”

“… So, we are cooking in the streets.”

“It becomes street food when we cook on the street. If you are going to ask if we are only going to cook something simple like a sandwich, then you are wrong. We will maintain the section and you will cook how you used to in the restaurant. But it will be different.”

“Is it possible? In the end, a food truck is a food truck.”

“We have the equipment. We also have the ingredients. Nothing is impossible. The only thing missing is how well you are going to perform under these conditions. Are you not confident?”

No one could reply to Rachel’s comment. That was when Jo Minjoon’s van pulled up behind the food truck making all sorts of motor noise. He got off and blankly stared at Rachel.

“…Is this what I think it is?”

“Probably. How is it? Do you like it? Or do you hate it?”

Jo Minjoon’s face lit up with a smile.

“Of course, I like it. When do we start? Are we starting today?”

His reaction was completely different than everyone else. Rachel made a satisfactory smile. And Janet muttered.

“… Son of a workaholic.”

  1. Thanks for the chapter Hwarang, Arocks141, Flowingcloud, Crystalblaze, Akir, Invalidlinks, Tim, and the rest of the Patreon sponsors! Can’t wait to see how the places they’re touring react to this surprise. Wonder if the Rose Island branches they’re visiting are going to take this as a challenge haha.
