One day early spring, I was enjoying my kindergarten life one way or another.

As I was comparing the children around me reading their picture books, a twin-tailed girl came while holding a box.

Behind her was a girl with bobbed hair holding a similar box.

“It’s Mikan! Mikan Asuka is here!!”

“I told you guys to call me ‘Orange’! I brought some oranges from my hometown! Let’s have them together♪”

“““Yay!!!”””

W-What’s going on?

While I was dumbfounded, everyone grabbed a tangerine from the box those two were holding and ate happily together. 1

In front of me was a tangerine.

The one that was holding it out to me was the twin-tail girl.

“Here. I’m giving it to you. It’s delicious.”

“Thanks. But, no matter how you look at it, its a tan—”

“An orange!!!”

Ah, okay.

For the time being, I peeled the tangerine that was called an orange.

“It’s delicious.”

“Right♪ Since it’s mine, feel free to eat as much as you want. I have a lot left over.”

I see.

The liberalization of beef and oranges, one of the main causes of the Japan-US trade friction, was about right now, wasn’t it?

I heard that tangerine farmers went out of business because of that.

Even so, it’s sweet and delicious.

When I noticed, I had already eaten one whole tangerine.

A second one was quietly presented to me. This time it was the bobbed-hair girl.

“Are you giving it to me?”

The bobbed-hair girl nodded her head.

I smiled and gratefully accepted it.

She was like a Japanese doll and is so cute.

“My name is Keikain Runa. Nice to meet you♪”

“My name is Kasugano Asuka. She’s Kaihoin Hotaru. Nice to meet you.”

When I was listening, she talked about her parents having issues processing large amounts of tangerines, but the story was so popular, I couldn’t stop it from becoming an event.

When I was listening to her story while eating the tangerine, I naturally arrived at the question.

“So, why do you call it ‘orange’?” (T/N: She calls ‘tangerines’ oranges. Yes, ‘orange’ in English.)

“Isn’t it given that it’s because it’s cool! This is not the era of ‘mikan’ but ‘orange’!!”

Is that so?

This will definitely be her dark past.

By the way, her family is a member of the National Diet, and her home, rather her electoral district, was in Ehime prefecture that’s filled with tangerines.

Of course, you’re going to have tons of tangerines left over because of that.

“……”

During the story, Hotaru-chan was deliciously eating her tangerine as she watched us happily chew our tangerines.

I could somewhat understand her eyes and facial expression, but this girl really wouldn’t talk.

Sensing that, Asuka-chan followed up.

“Hotaru-chan doesn’t speak much, but she’s my friend. At first, when I thought I lost my chopsticks, she handed me a tangerine and became my friend. Now we’re best buddies!”

Asuka-chan clung to Hotaru-chan and rubbed their cheeks together.

It looked like Hotaru-chan didn’t dislike it, and they were really good friends.

“I want to get along like that too.”

“Of course! People who eat my oranges are my friends after all!!”

“……”

Hotaru-chan nodded her head and put a third tangerine in my hands.

No.

It’s delicious, but a third one is a bit too much…

  1. Slavemaster (Cloud): If you couldn’t tell, mikan = tangerine. It’s a long-running joke so keep it in mind.
