Phoenix.

The legendary immortal bird that arose from the ashes of its predecessor. It was one of the creatures which inhabited Arcadia region of the Lemuria continent.

“Phoenix?!”

“Surely it’s not a phoenix…… did I hear that correctly?”

The treasure which Texas had produced caused a great uproar among the watching crowd. Even though very few players had actually seen a phoenix in person, every player knew that within the Arcadia region — the territory of the beast people — lived the bird with the supernatural ability to come back from the dead.

“Don’t tell me that they…… used feathers from a phoenix to make an evening dress?”

“I have a friend who is a werewolf, he said that there was a lot of Arcadian folklore around the immortal bird. It is said that the blood of a phoenix has the magical power of regeneration. As long as you still had a breath in your body, one drop of blood can gradually completely restore your condition and eliminate any negative status effects; clothing made from its feathers would never tear, and whoever wears it would also have the self-healing ability of the phoenix and would be cured of any disease……”

“That strong? Then couldn’t we go to Arcadia to hunt phoenixes and get rich?”

“Stop daydreaming! The human kingdoms have gone there to hunt for phoenixes multiple times before… but never has anyone managed to kill or catch a phoenix before!”

How did the Lone Star Merchants manage to hunt the legendary phoenix from the territory of the Arcadian beast people? This undoubtedly would be a lively talking point among the players.

Texas seemed to be rather pleased with the fierce debate going on. The liveliness of the crowd was proof of the difficulty of acquiring this hard-earned treasure.

A treasure that ought to only exist in legends…… Texas had now entrusted it to my hands.

It was feather-light. Between my fingers, I felt a thinness and smoothness on pair with that of silk.

An evening dress was a high-end outfit that a lady of respectable social status would wear to a dinner party. As if symbolizing the unending life of the immortal phoenix, this entire outfit was colored red. Moreover, this dress seemed to have been specially tailored for me. Perfectly fitted for my height and the design of the bust makes me more sure this was specially designed for me: it was distinctly intended for a woman with an ample chest.

The moment it was handed to me, I was able to view the properties of the [Phoenix Evening Dress].

In-game, an equipment’s defense is roughly correlated to appearance. An aristocrat’s clothing looks grand and majestical, but the downside is its low defense. Conversely, a knight’s armor was very cumbersome, but it had a far higher defense attribute than that of the aristocrat’s clothes. Light equipment with a high defense attribute was very rare — though it wasn’t rare to an exaggeratedly expensive degree, it was still quite costly.

This was especially true for lightweight defensive equipment for women. If you want defense, you should just wear proper armor. Though the human kingdoms had no lack of female knights, still a lot of the female player base thirsted for a dress that had the combination of powerful attributes as well as beauty and style.

[Phoenix Evening Dress] undoubtedly was the best equipment a girl gamer could dream for.

The number of attributes listed on this dress felt excessive to even a person naïve to gaming like me. Unlimited durability, indestructible, disease repellent, temperature regulation, and the combination of powerful defense with damage reduction, vulnerability reduction, mental resistance, increased health regeneration (increasing proportionally with the percentage of health lost), immunity to fire damage…… in addition to everything earlier in that list, isn’t complete immunity a bit too unbalanced?!

Not only that, but the [Phoenix Evening Dress] also had a bunch of abilities attached to it. That’s right, a bunch of abilities. First-rate equipment came with equipment abilities that could be showed off to one’s companions, though the strength of these abilities was another matter. The [Phoenix Evening Dress] had an unreasonable number of powerful equipment abilities attached to it.

Assuming I’ve read this correctly, the first ability of the [Phoenix Evening Dress] could be summarized as “after receiving a fatal wound, your HP would be locked to 1, and then it would recover to normal (the effect of minimum HP being 1 will remain until successful recovery to maximum health)”. In other words — in this game world without a resurrection skill — this would be like having an extra life.

But, but……

“Lord Texas, this gift is too precious. It does not suit someone of my status to accept such a gift.”

“This gift is unrelated to your status! What I am looking for is someone who would be able to wear this [Phoenix Evening Dress] without disgracing its quality, within all the Mikkel Kingdom I could find only you to meet this requirement.”

Texas did not allow any objection and was insistent on gifting the dress to me.

Tut tut… looks like Texas has won, with something like that phoenix evening dress it’s a given.”

“A single gift as probably blown her favorability off the charts, look at Anna, frozen in place.”

“If you gave it to any female aristocrat it’ll probably easily blow through their favorability rating, perhaps even the princesses would not be immune.”

“Hey, you do know that Anna’s popularity is such that not even the sum of the first, second and third princess’s popularity matches her, right…?”

“A big merchant demonstrating his ostentatious wealth, as expected.”

“Using phoenix feathers to make clothing, even the nouveau riche have to back off from that move.”

No, I––

[Item: Phoenix Evening Dress, successful transaction] [Congratulations, favorability has increased by zero]

“…………………………????”

At that, Mr Texas’ facial expression had completely frozen.

I-I am a man! Though my body is a girl……

I am willing to accept wearing maid outfits as it is a professional requirement for a maid, but this does not mean I would unconditionally wear any women’s clothing at all! I wouldn’t wear any other women’s clothes other than a maid outfit, not even under pain of death! This has nothing to do with my only having maid outfits to wear — but is my last stand as a (former) male.

This dress was most certainly stunning, but if you think about it, what man would be excited about receiving a beautiful woman’s dress from another man he’s met for the first time?

I was, unfortunately, unable to verbalize all of this, so I summoned up my courage and once again tried to hand the [Phoenix Evening Dress] back.

“Lord Texas will certainly meet a lady more suitable to wear this than a maid like myself, so please keep this gift for now.”

“………No, n-no.”

Mr Texas! Please cheer up, the lights are going out in your eyes! There’s no problem with the quality of this dress, but I really can’t accept such a low-cutting dress……

  1. Yeah, I this rate, rumors will probably spread about no amount of quality of dresses will increase her favorability since the legendary phoenix dress can’t even sway her even a bit of points XD

R.I.P. Texas, your effort will not be missed.

  2. Huh I wonder when the players will figure this out! It’s going to be a huge conundrum since no one looking at her NPC history or lore will be able to find a hint that she prefers boyish gifts hah. My guess is that someone will randomly give her another type of maid outfit and she’ll accept, causing a misunderstanding that she’s super devoted to her duty or something. We won’t get the proper gifts until wild mass guessing kicks in. Or maybe there’s a chance for players to talk to her and learn that way?

  3. Thank you for translating this. With this Pandemic going around, I was running out novels to read. I enjoy Gender Bender works and wish there were more of them of all kinds. I am looking forward to what a maid stuck in her house will do, once her shackles are gone. Stay safe and healthy.

  4. Texas deserved that utter destruction.
Dude didn’t realize at all how creepy it would be to have some rando come up to you and indicate that they’ve stalked you enough to know your sizes down to the last inch.
He also basically tried to buy her like an expensive harlot in front of thousands of people and even when she turned him down he insisted he could bribe his way into her heart.

I’m kind of amazed that none of these players have factored in that NPCs can hear what they say too, unless the npcs just pretend it’s the ramblings of insane madmen.
